Parakrama Samudraya – Polonnaruwa

Parakrama Samudraya
Parakrama Samudraya

Polonnaruwa is a district in the North Central Province of Sri Lanka.
Polonnaruwa is also known as the second kingdom in Sri Lanka. The kings of Sri Lanka, who named Polonnaruwa or the Pulathisipura after the kingdom of Anuradhapura have built most of the venerated monasteries, palaces and tanks in Sri Lanka.

We’re talking about one of the most important tank. It’s the Parakrama
Samudraya. When we see the blue water that spreads over a large area, we
think it is a sea. This lake with a lot of water has a very nice view.

Bluish tackling waves

You can easily reach the Parakrama Samudra from the old town of
Polonnaruwa. The bluish watercourse extending to the extremity and the cold winds of the blue streams will evade the tiredness of your face and your heart. And when you see the tackling waves, you will probably think that you are near a sea in the land. We are confident that the fascinating
scenery and cold waves will take you to a beautiful world.

One of the best irrigation work in Sri Lanka

Parakrama Samudra is one of the best irrigation works in Sri Lanka. The
Parakrama Samudra is a good example of how surprising the ancient
irrigation industry in Sri Lanka is.

In the past, the rulers who ruled in Ceylon showed keen interest in the
irrigation system. This was due to the fact that it was essential to keep
the water required for agricultural activities in the North Central
Province. The kings that were not interested in sending a drop of water
from the sky, without getting used to the sea, created huge tanks in the
dry zone of Sri Lanka.

King Parakramabahu the Great

This tank was built by King Parakramabahu who was a great ruler in the
Polonnaruwa kingdom. This Parakrama Samudraya also provides water for
agricultural purposes, and the city of Polonnaruaru is quite cool.

Tanks, Thopa, Eramudu and Dumutulu have been collected to build this
reservoir. The water is brought to the Parakrama Samudra by the Akasa
River. This has been built by constructing a dam across Amban Ganga and
Angamadilla river which is a tributary of the Mahaweli River. Similarly,
the waters of Girithale, Thambalawewa and Kadawalawewa feed the Parakrama Samudra.

The current reservoir is 12.38 miles [12.38 km] long. And the height is
9.45 meters. The catchment area of the reservoir is 71.71 square
kilometers and its spread is 2539.5 hectares. The water capacity of the
reservoir is 134.07 cubic meters. There is a small canal seen in the
reservoir. The islands which include the ancient ruins can be seen in the
middle of Parakrama Samudra.

Statue of king Parakramabahu the Great

Near the Parakrama Samudra, there is a statue that belongs to King
Parakramabahu VI who was the founder of this tank. Many people believe that
this statue is situated in the garden near the Parakrama Samudra, although
it contains many legends. In addition, several ruins connected to the lake
are now visible in that aisle. Deepa Park, Spring Palace and the Cold
Palace are the main ones.

Visit Parakrama Samudraya

If you are willing to travel to Polonnaruwa, you will get lucky to see the
ruins, temples and many amazing irrigation works in Sri Lanka. A little
moment close to the Parakrama Samudra will be a very beautiful memory in
your memory book. If you can walk to the Parakrama Samudraya in the
evening, we can be sure that you will be able to see a very nice, beautiful
senery. In the evening without rain, the breeze on the dam will be a
journey to nature. Your eyes will be painted in front of your eyes with a
sprawling paddy field, sunny summers of the sky, and an invisible blue
water stream. You have the opportunity to see and enjoy the beauty with
your eyes. Visit Parakrama Samudraya.

Vatadageya – Polonnaruwa

Vatadageya - Polonnaruwa
Vatadageya – Polonnaruwa

There is a point to know when we talking about the construction of Sri
Lanka. The former tax payers had engaged in construction and repairs as a
method of paying tax. These tax payers were used in Polonnaruwa as well.
However, the high quality of the design indicates that most of the work
done by skilled sculptures. In the Polonnaruwa era, the architecture of the
Vatadage type designs was high, and the Polonnaruwa Vatadage is considered to be its ultimate development.

Highly designed architecture

Some of the most attractive elements in the design are its complex
carvings. The moonstone in the northern entrance and the balustrade in the
eastern barrack are considered as the best examples of such architectural
creations belonging to the Pollonnaruwa era. These ornamental elements were
commonly found in the entrance to monastic buildings in ancient Sri Lanka
and historically it is believed that the moonstone depicts the life cycle
in Buddhism. According to Bell, it is clear that works of carving on the
sides of the upper platform can not be found in Anuradhapura or Polonnaruwa or possibly any other Buddhist temples in Sri Lanka.

Evidences found in excavations

The direct, symmetrical stone columns found in the Polonnaruwa Vatadage are
very similar to those found in buildings of the Anuradhapura era. Each foot
of a piller is carved into a lotus flower. Archaeologist Senarath
Paranavithana has speculated that these stone columns had carried a wooden roof. Most people admit this opinion, and nails and tiles which were used at that time have been found in excavations. However, the other view is that the Vatadage had no roof and that the stone columns had been used to hang lamps, curtains or Buddhist symbols.

Beautifully decorated paintings

Although the brick wall around the stage is considerably preserved,
some parts of it are broken. Its thickness is 2 feet 6 inches (0.76
meters), presumably had made to protect the stupa. There is evidence that
the inner surface of the wall was beautifully decorated with paintings. Its
lower part is covered with stone tablets engraved with flower patterns. The
side of the upper platform, as well as the side of the lower platform below
the wall is decorated with carvings.

Visit Vatadageya when you come to Polonnaruwa

The four Buddha statues sculpted with stone are the dyana seal. Two of them
are still stable, but the other two has destroyed. However, instead of the
traditional three rings around the stupa, there are only two. If you come
to Sri Lanka, visit Vatadageya in Polonnaruwa.

Atadageya – Polonnaruwa

Atadageya - Polonnaruwa
Atadageya – Polonnaruwa

We have told you earlier that the magnificent creations of the ancient time
are in Polonnaruwa. It can not be completed in one or two articles. The next
great creation that we can find in Polonnaruwa is Atadageya.

Where the tooth relic and the bowl relic had been placed

The Atadageya is the oldest building in the ancient temple of the Tooth
Relic in Polonnaruwa. The Tooth Relic was built by the King Vijayabahu the
Great (1055-1110 AD). This was a two storey building which consisted of
evidence that the tooth relic and the bowl relic were located at the upper
floor. In the Atadageya, upper floor was made of wood and the roof was made
of tiles. According to the Velakkara inscription, this shrine is assigned
to the king’s personal security men, Velaykkaras.

The Moonstone and the Balustrade

The building is a quadrilateral pavilion. It is seventy five feet away
from the front to the back, and the width of the rectangle is 45 feet. This
tower is located on the south side of the temple of tooth, with a staircase
which consists a moonstone made of limestone and a balustrade to the east.
The dimensional section of the Atadageya has been ruined for centuries and nothing remains in it except its form.
But for today, the design is amazing, and the most important story is
how the name Atadageya has been placed. The reason for the most commonly usage of this name can not guess at once, but maybe it is

Built by eight days

We simply can analyze it. It was not easy to do it. If it was done in at
least sixty days, we said it would be a tough time. Even the ruined parts
of the Atadageya depict the great architecture which was there at that
time. We can only imagine how charming the place was.
It is also depicts the talent of sculpture who made the moonstone and
the balustrade.  This is the Atadageya where every tourist must visit.

Koneswaram kovil | Most Powerful Shiva Kovil

Koneswaram kovil
Koneswaram kovil

Trincomalee is the main district of Eastern province. The largest natural
harbor in South Asia is located in Trincomalee. Similar tourist attractions
like Nilaveli, Marble Beach, Pigeon Island, Kinniya and many other
well-known tourist resorts have been found in Trincomalee.

The Koneshwaram temple is another place to remember in Trincomalee. This temple has been established for the sake of Lord Shiva on a small hill in a very beautiful environment. Thousands of foreign and local tourists come to see the Koneshwaram Kovil without a split. Therefore, this Koneshwaram Kovil is a place of great popularity among both Sri Lankans and foreign tourists.

The history of Hindus refers to five key shrines dedicated to God, called
Ishwara, or Shiva. This is a special feature for identifying this as the
“Ishwaram” which is at the end of each five kovils. The Thirukethiswaram
kovil in Mannar, Munneswaram kovil in Chilaw, Naguleswaram kovil in Jaffna, Thondeswaram kovil in Matara and Koneshvaram Kovil in Trincomalee are the five ishwaram kovils in Sri Lanka. In place of Thondeswaram Kovil in Matara, there is a kovil called Devinuvara Upulvan today.

The legend

According to the legend, the Konesvaram Kovil had been built by king
Ravana. Among the kovils mentioned, Konesvaram is the most famous and most powerful kovil. Although the kovils have been built around the world for worshiping Shiva, Koneshwaram is the most powerful kovil all over the world.

The mountain where the Koneswaram Kovil is located called mount Swami.
According to the legend, this is a part of the golden mountain of God that
was fallen according to the result of a conflict that arose among God.

This temple is located on the Frederic Fortress. You want to enter the
Federic Fortress first. Then you can cross the marsh trees and climb Mount
Swami and you can reach the Koneswaram Kovil.

It is difficult to get there with naked legs during the afternoon, because
the land is hot. But in view of the devotees who worship the kovil, we see
how powerful the beliefs of them, for this kovil and the god of Shiva.

The main festival of this temple is held annually in April. As well as
daily rites will be held at 7.15 am, 11 am and 4 pm. You will be able to
experience Hindu rituals, if you participate in a ceremony at the
Koneswaram Kovil at once, though you are not Hindu.

The Koneshwaram kovil is well-known for another matter. Thousands of
parents who do not have children come to this Koneswaram temple and pray
for children. There is no split. They wish to tie a small wooden crib on a
tree in the ground of the kovil. Therefore, the trees on one side of the
kovil are filled with wooden cribs. From all the wooden cribs, you can see
the lovely little dreams of the people.

When the coastal areas of Ceylon were subjected to Portuguese rule in the
17th century, they dismantled the ancient Konesvaram kovil and used it with the debris to build the fort. It was also mentioned that the statues of the Kovil were taken to the Lisbon museum and that it was hidden under the earth. In history, it was mentioned that in 1963, the Konesvaram kovil was built using ancient statues and objects of the Buddha.

From the bottom of the Koneshwaram Kovil, the tropical blue sea is visible.
Because the sea water is beautiful in blue, it’s a fantastic view. Being on
a side of a corridor on a side of the kovil and looking at a beautiful sea
will make you a very different experience.

Therefore, if you come to Sri Lanka, do not forget to go to Trincomalee.
Trincomalee is a city with many places to enjoy and visit. Koneswaram is
the most important among them.

Add this memorable memory to your memories with this eye-catching beauty.

Thivanka Image House | Polonnaruwa

Thivanka Image House
Thivanka Image House

Thivanka image house, one of the most prominent places in the world is in Polonnaruwa. You can find it through various different profiles but it should be more talked about the beautiful pictures of the Thivanka Buddha statue. The name “Thiwanka” is given due to the statue which has bent from three sides. But you should be more talkative about the brilliance of the images in the house. Therefore, if you come to Polonnaruwa, you should not forget to visit Thiwanka image house. It is also a mistake to forget the Sigiriya frescoes if you come to Sri Lanka and forget about this treasure. The artwork is closer to the Sigiriya paintings. Whatever the reason, it would seem that the similarity would be clear. Collections of paintings on the image house similar to the conventional arts of Sigiriya in colour, figures, shapes and lines. The painting of “Sankassapura wadamawima” is a world – wide painting. This may be the only painting of a prophet, not only in Sri Lanka, but also in the whole world. Here is a story about the Lord Buddha. It’s simply the following:

After receiving his ordination, the Buddha preached her mother that she was the first to preach his Dhamma in the heavens.

The most striking feature is that these forms are equal in style to the Sigiri depictions. We are sure that you have not seen pictures of Thiwanka image house, but you may have seen painting of Sigiriya. You can be someone who has never been to Sri Lanka. First read this story

What is this Tiwanka image house

However, if you are going to visit Sigiriya, you would definitely have to separate little time to watch this painting before you left Sri Lanka. Polonnaruwa is one of the more tourist attraction place in Sri Lanka. Therefore, the art in Tiwanka Image house should be watch by you all.

These pictures are mostly similar to the Sigiriya paintings. They have the same look in faces. They also share a kind of image. But in Sigiriya, there’s no mention yet Who does the painting represent. There are gods in the Thivanka image house in Polonnaruwa. That is why they have blossoms in their hands.

However, we do not appreciate the artwork  than we did.
Come and visit Thiwanka image house. We want you to chat with us. We are ready to help you anymore for free

Okanda kovil | A Dreadful Night With Wild Animals

Okanda kovil
Okanda kovil

This story is written so far in Colombo. That distance is more than 300 kilometers. We came to Pottuvil via Ratnapura, Monaragala and Panama. The last settlement we had in this journey was Panama. We passed Panama and came forward. From Panama, on the muddy clay road, over 20 kilometers from Panama, Okanda is found. On one side, it boarders to the shoreline and from the other side to the Kumana national park.
If you are staying the night, there is only one place suitable for that. That’s Okanda kovil. We stayed there for the night. That means in the Okanda kovil ground. When we arrived at the Okanda, it is evening. We were welcomed by a herd of wild pigs. The herd of 10-15 pigs, they perambulated in the kovil ground during the whole night. Only during a special ceremony, Okanda became a haven for a large crowd. Therefore, the animals perambulate in the surrounding of the Okanda frequently. Also we said early, that Okanda is bordered to Kumana National park. So how do the animals know the boundaries?
When we came to the temple,  firstly we received a scary advice.

“There is not only an elephant but also a Tiger near the kovil,” he said. “That’s why you should have a fire burning at night.” So, we were ready to spend the most dreadful night in our life.

The only way to get water to Okanda kovil is the jack Well. It is not easy to draw water from the well. Earlier days, people had drawn water using a bucket made of palm leaf. But now there is a metal bucket for it. Pulling a couple of water with difficulty and treading it down, you’ll end up feeling exhausted. But this is not like campingping elsewhere, because we are in a kovil ground. This is a strange experience.

We started to sleep in the night watching the stars of the sky and watching for a long time in the deep sea. But once in a while we were awaken by the wild elephant who walked around us, they did not allow us to sleep a lot on the ground of the kovil. But we did not have any trouble for the gods sake.

We’re in the East. That is the area that shakes hands with the sun before everyone. By the time 5 am, we were awaken to look beautiful of the first dawn. But we were unlucky. Because of the heavy rainfall, the sky was battered by the heavily black clouds. Okanda beach is one of the most beautiful beaches in Sri Lanka. The main reason for it is that it has been alienated from people. In the early morning, we were very touched by the Okanda beach and we went to Okanda kovil, which is a sacred place for the Lord Kataragama.

Story behind Okanda Kovil

Now the story of Okanda kovil is being discussed. The Prince who came from India comes to Sri Lanka from the coast. Prince Skanda came to Okanda on the shoreline. The ship which he came said to be the rock on the Okanda beach called Orugala. However, the legends have been pushing the devotees from all over Sri Lanka to prove their vows. There are many Sinhalese devotees among them

Velgam Vehera | Historical Buddhist Temple

Velgam Vehera
Velgam Vehera

Along the memory of Velgam Vehera

This story is not about today. This story belongs to history. Historical means not for 400 or 500 years. Not remember at all. This was the period of peace being discussed. The war was being continued. However, there was hope that the war would soon be over. But the war did not settle peacefully. It’s a separate story.

We did not know about the Velgam Vehera then. We spent the night in a temple in China Bay. Someone had said about the Velgam Vehera temple. They said that it was a beautiful place. So, we decided to visit Velgam Vehera after having our breakfast. It was not difficult to find the temple. The Sinhalese and the Tamils  looked at us nervously. They might think that we were not aware of such a sacred place. Perhaps they might think that these people were finding a place where people do not often go. We gradually followed the road that they said.

The city area was soon finished. After that, we hoped that there would be small Tamil-Muslim mixed cottages. But we found them only in the first 200 meters. Unfortunately, the shrubs were found and the cottages disappeared.
There are no villagers. Everywhere, only the broken houses. Everywhere, the trees full of mangoes. Some are full of ripped mangoes. That’s how the trees are. But none of us had enough time to get out of the vehicle.
The roads were broken. We didn’t travel at least 20 km per hour in speed. But they were straight. No need to stop. We did not feel bad. We thought that we would meet a junction where we will soon find a people. So we traveled ahead. We did not even turn again. Already we were near the Velgam Vehera. There was no one to ask the road even. We could not go anywhere. We could not get down. Anybody in the vehicle did not even tell a word. We traveled for thirty or forty minutes. We arrived.

There was a sign of a temple on the right side of the road. However, it was the Velgam Vehera Raja Maha Viharaya. We entered with a great comfort because we had not seen a man for two hours. When we arrived at the temple, there were only the soldiers and some civilians in the temple.
They told us about Velgam Vehera Raja Maha Viharaya.

This village has been attacked several times by the Terrorists.

The villagers and the monks of the Velgam Vehera temple were been killed by the terrorists. They had always come to this place. The innocents were been killed brutally.

There were so many things that were happening then. At the time, there were so many valuable things in this temple. There are ruins since the last royal tribute, until the motor which is not blasted. So, no details are needed. The roads are comfortable now. So come and visit.
This is the Velgam Vehera Raja Maha Viharaya
